Nikon V1 + FT1 + 200mm f/2 Practice Photos
Last week I practiced with the above crazy combo, the Nikkor 200mm f/2 on the teeny tiny mirrorless V1 with the FT1 adapter. I was wondering if a few upcoming events could benefit from the outrageous 2.7x crop that is in effect with this setup. Would this be a good replacement for a teleconverter, and would this also be better than cropping into a higher megapixel full frame like the D800?

When mounted on the 1″ sensor this lens has the FOV of a 540mm lens, which is still astounding. I’ve used the 70-200mm f/2.8 with the adapter many times in the past, but that lens doesn’t resolve that well, with too much fringing and image quality penalty. The 200mm f/2 prime though, it’s very sharp with hardly any chromatic aberrations. After taking a bunch of photos I would have to say this is a viable option for some subjects from an image quality point of view.

The V1 with the latest and last firmware supports continuous AF-C with this lens and it still has a generous 40+ 10 megapixel (3872×2592) image buffer with a silent shutter that you can fire off in large bursts. I prefer still photography as opposed to video as you can simply delete junk photos, but in selecting and trimming video, you still have to decide what to do with the inevitable huge source clip.
The camera pretty much acts like a rear lens cap to this heavy lens. Ergonomically this is definitely not viable long time, as you have to cradle the lens even more or put the thing on a monopod.
Here are some photos from walks around the park in this still hot and humid Georgia summer.

Amazing how well the lens renders on this small sensor. I still couldn’t find hardly any color aberrations, and these images look like they could pass for a different system.

This little guy stood still long enough for me to test out different apertures. Its face is plenty sharp wide open, and stopping down only clears up the branches in the woods behind. The small sensor isn’t going to produce noise free images for sure like a FF sensor, but it’s definitely good enough for online posting.

The nice thing about mirrorless tech, even this one from a decade+ ago is that the focus is pin point, unlike some DSLRs that just fudge the numbers on phase detect. I shot these photos of my drawings from clear across the room, and to be honest the 200mm f/2 resolves almost like a macro lens.

Score another use for the Nikkor 200mm f/2! Even when bolted on to a somewhat limited old first gen Nikon mirrorless (with many annoying quirks and questionable UI decisions) this thing can still produce some sharp and clear photos.
