Amazing performances by the ACDC at nearby Gas South Theater! The week leading up to the event I was thinking about the gear needed to best cover the event, and for the full dress rehearsal I brought this setup to the venue:

I sat up in the top balcony during practice and set up a D610 with a 24-70mm f/2.8 connected to a pocket wizard. On my main handheld camera was a D600 with the huge 200-500mm f/5.6 that was borrowed from a friend. This camera also had a pocket wizard that let me trigger camera B with only a slight delay. So this way I could get the standard full stage shots of the entire ensemble and get the selections of performers and moments with the big zoom.

The 200-500mm really shines in this type of setting and distance. f/5.6 was actually usable even in the dim lighting (because of course it’s always dark at performances…), and that aperture allows for getting rows of distance dancers in adequate depth of field. Luckily I sat down the entire practice because the 200-500 is almost as heavy as the 200mm f/2.

Editing all the photos was crazy though, as it was basically doubling up on the amount of images I had to cull. Some of the other images were captured on a 70-200mm f/2.8 and 200mm f/2 as well. For the actual show with a house full of guests I switched over to mirrorless for a quieter shutter and a realtime preview of whatever wild white balance the stage lighting was giving.
