I gathered up the 3 50mm lenses that I have in the Minolta/Sony Mount and took some test photos. My first 50mm was the AF 50mm f/1.7 that I used in college. It was already old back then, but little did I know of its power to see and render life on black and white film. Sadly this copy has problems stopping down due to oil on the aperture blades and has been relegated to the ancient tech shelf. The second 50mm I have for the Sony platform is the FE mount version of the 50mm f/1.8. I’ve read that it’s a clone of the Minolta version, and I think so since it has a nice hazy way of rendering wide open, but still plenty sharp when stopped down. The last 50mm is the f/1.4 that I thrifted for $4! It’s also mounted on an A7 with the LA-EA4 autofocus adapter.
I thought I was going to do a head to head comparison with the Minolta f/1.7 vs the Sony f/1.8, but the Minolta one is inconsistent due to the oil/sticky aperture blades.
So the rest of this post are samples of my artwork (live figure drawings and portraits) taken with the A7 and 50mm f/1.4 with early morning daylight through my window.
