JA Fall Wedding – Photo Spots Breakdown

Hello, hope everyone had a good start to the holiday season here in the states.  It’s cold and rainy right now and the year is winding down so I thought I would do a post about a neat wedding from earlier this month.

(I could do a much longer post on the fact that on this unseasonably warm day for this outside Indian wedding a crazy rainstorm drenched the area right when the ceremony was starting…but I’d rather have this post focus on the bride and groom photos that I shot at the beginning of the day!) 🙂

Big thanks to Donald Douglas Photography for the drone shots and video coverage and Ek for the help that day.

Drone Photos by Donald Douglas

While I was looking through the drone shots I saw how one frame managed to capture the entire vastness of the venue (a private farm) and the logistical challenges of finding spots to quickly take photos.  This fall season has been somewhat of a dull one for colorful leaves but at least the nice sunlight was on our side.  The drone picture actually had all the spots that I ended up using in the 45 min pre wedding shoot.

In the header image above I named and have number callouts on the spots I used in order.  These were the spots that caught my eye as I walked the property around 12:40pm, to get ready for the B+G photo shoot at 1pm. I usually opt for what is closest and then mentally plan a route that I can take that makes sense and doesn’t double back or waste time.  As most professional photographers would tell you, you’d rather be shooting anywhere, as time with the B+G is actually quite limited especially after ceremony time turns into reception time.  Luckily this pre ceremony shoot was much longer than what I normally get.

1.) Lemon Tree near the front of the property

I’d been to the venue earlier in the year in the spring so the grounds were much different in Nov.  Again, the drought and odd blasts of arctic cold did a number on all the trees in Georgia this year.  Luckily there were a few trees in the landscape that still had colorful leaves.  The lemon tree near the front of the building had dropped fruit on the ground and was backlit so I knew this was a good place to start.  Spots like this would also work for fashion shoots with long dresses.

2) Flat bed that was setup for snacks and refreshments

3) Banana tree grove

4) White pergola

Two almost consecutive frames that show how fast the sunlight can change.

5) Last remaining tree with fall color

This is the spot that I had my eye on when I first walked the property. A backlit tree with colorful leaves is a staple of many a portrait photographer.

6) Pond and tall grass with nice backlighting

The distance on the grounds was definitely a challenge.

7) Mandap/Ceremony area

Here is the mandap ceremony area.  I used the middle photo for the first double page spread for the wedding book. So glad the weather cooperated for the pre shoot, as once again, the rain that rolled through at 4pm was just crazy.
