(Yes I’m trying to be fancy here) 🙂
That was a fun and cute event! Thanks to the CCS family+community for letting me practice with my random camera gear and capture all the smiling faces. The Lolita fashion show was great!
I actually had a chance to go to the SEC championship game today but declined because I’m always a jinx. 😉 The last one I was at wasn’t so great for the dawgs. That’s fine because I went to this chill and pretty event instead!
For this event I brought along some battery powered LED holiday lights I got from Amazon a while back. They are really affordable especially with a big pack of AA batteries from Harbor Freight (something like a crazy $3 I think). When you put them in front of wide aperture lenses like an 85mm, the lights blur, further adding a nice color wash and randomness to images that I think fits the J kawaii aesthetic. One could even use these and other lights sources and prisms to create realtime transitions for video clips, instead of the canned ones that mimic film light leak fades.
I also brought along my heart shaped bokeh filter, but I think it works better on a 50mm f1.4 and not the 85mm 1.2 due to the size of the front element. But here’s a sample shot:
I did lug my huge Nikon 200mm f/2 to this event, but I forgot to take a photo of that big setup. I’ve been there enough times to always use the LED string lights as a background, but wanted to really get crazy with the bokeh rendering of that large telephoto. Again, in videogame speak that lens is the equivalent of a buster blade/Guts greatsword.
Thanks so much to everyone for dressing up and posing. Photographers have the easier of the job for sure! Anyone that would want to collab LMK! Here are the rest of my photos (300+).
