I have several faulty Canon lenses that just can’t be used for work stuff anymore. As much as I would like some new RF lenses like either of the compact 70-200mm’s, they are just a bit too expensive right now. As long as I can find some workable tools that you don’t have to finance through our credit card overlords I’m okay with that. Enter a used Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. This is the older one from 2005 and on the used market is cheaper than the RF one that does not have IS.
It uses a slower buzz buzz type of AF motor that isn’t as nice as the one in my unreliable 100-300mm but it does have Image Stabilization and can stay around f/4.5-5 in the 100-150mm range. I’m not using this lens for low light sports or fast action as I have other tools for that, but for many situations where I need to save weight in a 3 camera loadout, I think this might work out. I have this mounted on the R8 and its high ISO abilities can make this lens usable.

The auto distortion correction at some of the focal lengths automatically makes DPP crop into the image, giving you less than the exact 24MP (6000×4000 pixels on the R8). If you manually edit the raw files in DPP to disable the correction you can get more on the edges of the frame.
