Olympus 40-150mm f/4-5.6 – Sample Photos

Hello everyone I bought a cheap Olympus 40-150mm f/4-5.6 the other day.  On micro 4/3 cameras it’s like the FOV of an 80-300mm(!) on larger sensor cameras.  But much much smaller.  I got this to assemble a light weight kit, and to see if it would possibly work for event photography in quiet environments.  Sadly it doesn’t do the job well, at least to my standards, since the aperture and small sensor isn’t that great indoors.  That’s always been the drawback of smaller cameras, they just need so much light.  As with all things photography, there’s no free lunch, and everything’s a battle of compromises. This lens makes up for its deficiencies in other ways though!

The Olympus 40-150mm f/4-5.6 is best for light weight hikes and journey’s around town.  The lens when retracted is about as small as the other kit lens I have, which is crazy.  It’s super light too, taking up hardly any room in bags.  I think I’ve written about the E-M1 before, it actually has a really great sensor, producing lovely colors and very sharp files.  This 40-150mm I think is a bargain in the world of photography, since the optics are pretty good!  It doesn’t have built in IS, but the Olympus sensors take care of that.

I really like how the 40-150 can focus pretty close to things at various focal lengths.  For product photography, it’s not bad.  In somewhat controlled environments the rock solid in body IS of the E-M1 will allow you to shoot at smaller apertures and low iso for better color fidelity.
