Random Thrifting Haul – Canon Powershot A400 for $5!

Canon PowerShot A400 for $5!

To follow up on my previous post, I got also got a screaming deal on this 2004 Canon digicam.  $5 and it came with a case! With “lofi” tech like this trending again I can’t believe it wasn’t snatched up by someone else.  Ironically though 3.3 megapixel cameras of this era, the image quality is quite good, and not “filmic” at all, don’t believe the internet.  It takes a lot of subtle imaging characteristics like grain and underexposure from digital to even get close to what folks thought early digital looked like.

This camera, being over 20 years old, the little watch battery for the clock expired ages ago, giving the annoying date reset prompt every time I powered it on. I had to order two sets of batteries (the first was my mistake) and this pushed this camera into the outrageous $20 range.  🙂 Oh, this camera also takes plain old SD cards and works well with rechargeable AA Eneloops or the IKEA variety.

I personally don’t think the image is as unique as the Nikon Coolpix 3700, but it’s very standard Canon imaging.  More like pop music if you will, as opposed to artistic grunge that everyone is supposedly looking for in the digicam aesthetic.  My advice is just enjoy the real flash that these cameras have.  That’s what gives digicams the edge in carefree photography.  The flash is so close to the lens that it fits perfectly for “club style” photos and the American Apparel fashion aesthetic (which I personally still love).

I had to edit these somewhat, just adding contrast to some shots.  Again, the default Canon picture settings was really mild back in the day.  One quirk about this camera is that the date/timestamp only works in “Postcard” 1600×1200 resolution.  Give me all my 3.3 Megapixels Canon! 😉  I don’t know how many graphic designers or experienced photographers visit my site, but 3.3 MP is 2048×1536, more than enough for this blog, or an online listing to sell something.  Have things really changed that much image wise in 20 years?
