Technical Notes:\u00a0With more time on my hands, wanted to work out some stuff in harsher lighting conditions, should I be faced with them on a gig again or just some time crucial shoot.\u00a0 Purposely didn’t use the Nikon CLS system, just wanted to drive manual this time.\u00a0 Photo is deceiving because the sun was out in full force, with some extreme backlighting.\u00a0 24-105mm f\/4 on the Canon and PW’ed bare SB800.\u00a0 “Simulated” ISO 50 on the 5D mk II is the only ISO setting I’ve found without the garish pattern color noise.\u00a0 It’s in there even at\u00a0native ISO 100\u00a0in a RAW, especially if NR isn’t enabled.\u00a0 A shame really, as it shows up in dark hair and shadow areas.\u00a0 But I’ll take it over the color noise in the underexposed\u00a0SD14 strobist\u00a0shots any day (which are so bad, I don’t even want to post them).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

If you shoot natural light in this tough situation you can rarely\u00a0have it both ways, that is, both subject and background exposed.\u00a0\u00a0The Nikons have mostly always metered conservatively in Matrix\u00a0and (P)rogram\u00a0mode, meaning you’ll most often times\u00a0get\u00a0silhouetted figures in situations like this.\u00a0 This image is what I got out of messing with the RAW file.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I’ve noticed f\/4 on FF digital has a\u00a0subject and background separation similar to f\/2.8 on crop cameras.\u00a0 Which can be good or bad depending on which side you’re looking from.\u00a0\u00a0For those that like pin sharp photos and large depth of field\/focus, sometimes there’s no need to “upgrade” from\u00a0crop sensor\u00a0cameras if you\u00a0combine them with the\u00a0the right lenses.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

85mm f\/1.4 just shooting through some daisies.\u00a0 I mostly shoot\u00a0the lens\u00a0at f\/2, which even Nikon thinks is the optimum aperture in non nighttime scenes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
