D600 and friends–the FA and F100<\/p><\/div>\n\n(Update 1-2026: 13 years after buying, I still use this camera all the time.\u00a0 Regardless of its quirks I’ve shot many of my favorite portraits and event photos with this Nikon.\u00a0 Like all cameras it shines with great lenses and you really have to edit the raw files in the native Nikon software to get maximum results, or better exports for further creative editing.\u00a0 This D600 of mine did have to be serviced by Nikon due to the oil+shutter issue but this camera has been great.\u00a0 Well besides the broken aperture lever after about 11 years of use–that only lets me shoot either wide open or just fine with E aperture lenses. I currently have almost 500,000 clicks on it.)<\/em>\n\n

Nikon D600 First Impressions<\/span><\/h1>\nI added a D600 to the fleet in hopes that it can solve a need of mine, a low light, JPEG only camera for events. \u00a0I’ve been known to shoot oddball combos at events and weddings simply because I like how the different setups gets the mind going. \u00a0For me lots of times, photography in the field is like videogame RPG’s, trying to figure out cool setups with the different characters. \u00a0Or in a less nerdy analogy, if you’re a red blooded American, you have to figure out setups for both the M4 rifle and Glock sidearm, to be prepared for when zombies or Cobra finally attacks. \u00a0For regular photography though, a great “A” camera can make things much easier, in terms of capturing the image and in post as well. \u00a0I know everything is going mirrorless and compact these days, but everyone still needs a DSLR, simply because they are the workhorses. \u00a0While EVF’s are a nice thing for real time preview, no review site ever mentions that you can have a DSLR in the ready to go position for days on end since the battery is just flipping up the mirror, shutter, and making the picture from the sensor. \u00a0So here’s my rolling review of Nikon’s latest full frame FX sensor camera, one that is getting high praise around the web due to its relative “low” introductory price and image quality.\n\nD600 Initial Impressions:<\/strong>\n
